Jargon:Zone of Operating Genius (ZoOG)

Say this at the party
“The work only you do brilliantly, and that gives you energy back. Hand everything else to people or AI, so you can spend your days there.”
In plain English
The psychologist Gay Hendricks split work into four zones. Incompetence: things you're bad at. Competence: things you can do, but so can plenty of others. Excellence: things you're great at, but which quietly drain you. Genius: work that comes naturally, that nobody does quite like you, and that leaves you with more energy than you started with.
Your Zone of Operating Genius, or ZoOG for short, is that genius zone applied to your working week. It's the few jobs where you add the most value and feel most alive, and the question of how much of your time you actually spend on them.
AI is changing the maths. It's getting good at a lot of excellence-zone work, like drafting, summarising and analysing. That frees more of your time for the work that's truly yours, if you choose to use it that way.
Where it came from
Gay Hendricks described the Zone of Genius in his 2009 book The Big Leap, and founders have been building their companies around it ever since. As AI took on more everyday work in 2025 and 2026, the idea had a revival: if a machine can do your zone of excellence, what's left is your genius. Zone of Operating Genius, or ZoOG, is Ugenie's own twist on it. The extra O is for how you operate, day to day.
See it in action
A founder notices she loses every Monday to invoices and meeting notes, but comes alive pitching to investors and talking to customers. She hands the admin to an assistant and a couple of AI tools, and protects her mornings for pitching and customer calls. That's working in her ZoOG.
What people get wrong
- Your genius isn't just what you're best at. You can be excellent at something that slowly wears you out. Genius is the work that gives you energy back.
- It's not an excuse to dodge every boring job. It's about deciding, on purpose, what to hand off and to whom.
Where Ugenie fits
Your ask is AI's task: Ugenie hands the work outside your ZoOG to the AIs you use, and only brings you the three main tasks that need you.
