Jargon:Human in the loop
1 min read
Say this at the party
“It means a person checks or approves what the AI does at the important moments, instead of letting it run entirely on its own.”
In plain English
The AI does the legwork, but a human is part of the process. They might approve a step, fix a mistake or make the final call.
The loop is the cycle of work. Being "in" it means the AI pauses for you. Being out of it means it carries on without asking.
Think of a sat nav suggesting a route while you still hold the steering wheel.
Where it came from
The phrase is decades old in military simulation and weapons design, where it meant a person stays part of the decision. It moved into machine learning (people correcting a model's training), and now describes AI agents that stop and ask before doing anything big.
See it in action
An AI drafts replies to Jo's customer emails, but nothing is sent until she reads each one and presses approve.
What people get wrong
- A human in the loop only helps if they actually look. Clicking "approve" on everything without reading is not oversight.
- It isn't a sign the AI is bad. Even very good systems keep a person in charge of risky or final decisions.
Where Ugenie fits
Ugenie is built around this: it keeps an eye on the AIs you use and brings you the three main tasks that need you next.
